As a boundery-stretching filmmaker, Peet enjoys bringing the same eclectic palette to the musical canvas. Some of you may remember him as the frontman of Rotterdam funk sensation Dirty Laundry. Nowadays he creates richly layered sonic tapestries that feel evocative and cinematic.
For the soundtracks of Beauty Surrounds You (Mooi Hier Alles) and From Vincent to Van Gogh (Van Vincent naar Van Gogh), he collaborated with Impasto Ensemble, a collective of musicians with a rotating lineup. The term “impasto” refers to an artistic technique in which paint is applied in thick strokes, providing depth and texture. Impasto Ensemble lives up to its name: the group blends a wash of classical orchestration with a drizzle of atmospheric ambient, a splatter of jazz rolls, dabs of warm electronica and the occasional dollop of Morricone, into a painterly panorama for the ears.
Occasionally Peet releases music under the moniker Man After Midnight, ranging from synthwave (All Systems Go) to full-on pop songs (Fusion Frequency). He also wrote and produced two instrumentals for the When Forever Dies soundtrack, nominated for the Buma Award for Best Original Composition.
