The Discreet Charm Of Surrealism

(Sorry for the late upload–I was in the middle of switching to a new MacBook Pro. Yay!)

Yes, that’s Naomi Watts in the rabbit costume (believe it or not, that was also her in Inland Empire). I’ve made some changes to her suit; being Dutch, I couldn’t resist to make a reference to Dick Bruna’s Miffy. You may recognize the fellow on Naomi’s left: it’s Mulholland Drive’s The Cowboy. My first thought was to use the Elephant Man in his place, but that would have made this gag way too tragic. (Tears well up in my eyes whenever I think of John Hurt as Merrick. I say this without irony.)

NEXT WEEK: The worst film of 2008?

I’m not a big Lynch fan, I think he’s like Bunuel only without a shred of subtlety. He wears it all on his sleeve.

Then again: Dreams and nightmares aren’t always subtle, are they?

We have to agree to disagree on the subject of Lynch, cause I love the man. Someone I know handed Lynch one of my earlier cartoons in which he prominently featured (this strip could be seen as a sequel of sorts). Apparently, it left him looking “a little befuddled.” Heh!
