Hitchcock Chimes In

For the record: Alan Smithee replaced both Robert Totten and Don Siegel on Death of a Gunfighter (1969), the first film to use the fictional Smithee credit.

This last panel is as near as I’m ever gonna come to Warren Ellis’s “widescreen comics” movement. (With special thanks to Michael Petersen!)

The House Next Door is also reissuing my Nighthawks: A Celluloid Fantasia essay today. If you’re a fan of Directorama and never had a chance to read it, you may adore this. Print it out and take your time to take it in; it’s quite a ride and still very close to my heart. Whatever you may think of it, the cast is to die for: Mickey Mouse, Travis Bickle, Jules Winnfield, Vincent Vega, Alvy Singer, Marge Gunderson, Kate Miller, Roy Batty, Barbarella, Loana and, last but not least, the Mystery Guest to end all Mystery Guests…

NEXT WEEK: Exit Truffaut–and a dramatic one at that!
