One of the (many) reasons why the original Dutch version of "the Vanishing" is such a brilliant movie is the fact that, though she's only in the first 5 minutes of the movie (well, approx.), she makes such a great impression that her radiant face stays with you for the rest of the movie (and makes the whole, obsessive search understandable, even necessary) I absolutely agree on Johanna Ter Steege.
